Bella had already made her choice, but their conversation over dinner had sealed it. She dipped her fork into the luscious cake and fought back the nerves about what was to come. Today Burke had been very open with her, sharing his own insecurities. It was clear that the physical attraction was a real thing and she liked him...a lot. Moreover, she trusted him as much as she’d ever trusted anyone. Today had been the perfect date. She hadn’t lied about that. The butterfly house and the gardens and a romantic dinner...there wasn’t a single part of it that hadn’t been absolutely lovely.

“Your cake looks amazing.”

“Here, try some.” She put some on her fork and held it out, and he leaned forward and closed his lips around it. She was mesmerized by the sight of them touching the tines, taking the cake into his mouth. She wanted to kiss him again, badly. To be held in his arms and to have the time to kiss him properly, without sneaking it in an airplane galley or a briefly empty elevator.

“Mmm...delicious.”

“It is. And rich. But every now and then you have to treat yourself.”

The rest of dessert seemed to take too long. When they were finally finished, and Bella signaled for the bill, a slight awkwardness fell over them. Burke was waiting, she knew. Waiting for her to confirm what she’d said earlier. She’d chosen the hotel restaurant deliberately, because if she got cold feet it would be easy to go upstairs and spend the evening alone, as planned. But she wasn’t going to do that. She was going to grab her overnight bag, drop her key and go with him. To his place.

Burke reached over and took her hand when she signed the slip to charge the meal to the room. “Bella,” he said, his voice hesitant.

“Let me go upstairs and get my things,” she replied quietly. “I’ll drop my key in the express checkout for the morning.”

His eyes widened.

“I wasn’t sure, either,” she said. “But I am now.”

They got up from the table and she put a hand on his arm. “Wait for me in the lobby. I’ll be back soon.”

She took the elevator upstairs, her heart pounding the whole time. She was mostly sure of what she was doing, and the little bit that wasn’t sure, she understood was nerves because this was a Big Deal. Inside the room, she took a few minutes to tuck her things into her small bag and clear her toiletries out of the bathroom. Her throat tightened as she thought of the hours ahead. Would it be wonderful? Awkward? Disappointing? Her hand paused on the door handle. Burke. Of all the men over the years, she’d chosen Burke. He was the only one who knew what happened to her, who had seen how badly she’d been marked, and he wanted her anyway.

It was time to go.

She closed the hotel room door behind her and made her way down in the elevator again. Burke hadn’t moved from his spot in the lobby, and she took a hidden moment to study him.
